Roots & Wings: New Garden Education Program!

Our new outdoor science education program started in December 2022. Check out some photos below!

Each month, every class will visit the garden for a lesson taught by a Roots & Wings staff member. The lessons will be tailored to each grade level's science curriculum, helping to support our teachers while ensuring every Loma Vista student has the opportunity to visit garden.

Fall 2022

We've planted pumpkins, watermelon, artichokes, basil, onions, lettuce, spinach, as well as Thanksgiving herbs (parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme). As produce is harvested, we will be working with our Community Liaisons to deliver fresh produce to families.

Summer 2022

While teachers and students enjoyed summer break, our Garden Coordinator Mrs. Driscoll was still hard at work! The salsa garden that was planted in the spring yielded tomatoes, peppers, onions, and herbs, as well as zucchini and mandarins -- which she and her special helpers sold at several pop-up Garden Markets throughout Tustin over the summer. This raised over $400 for the PTO!  Thank you, Mrs. Driscoll!

Garden Updates

Here are some of the changes/additions our fabulous Garden Coordinator Mrs. Driscoll and her volunteers have made in the garden over the past year!

Clay Pot Irrigation
Clay pot irrigation is an ancient technology that works by soil moisture tension. Clay pots, called ollas, are buried next to your plans and filled with water. The water is pulled into the soil as it is needed, never over or under watering the plants.
